Parents can create calm, safe spaces for children to express their feelings by incorporating mindfulness activities into daily life.

  • Exercising as a family is a great way to stay in shape and help manage stress. Even just 30 minutes of running or walking a day can make a big difference in both physical and mental health.  Exercising helps to release feel-good endorphins that make you feel better and energized.  According to a study by the American Psychology Association (APA), thirty-seven percent of teens say they exercise specifically for stress-relief. Try activities that the whole family can participate in such as going for a walk, hike, or bike ride.
  • While physical activity has shown many positive results when it comes to stress-relief, taking on creative and mental activities as a family can also help with managing stress and anxiety. A family art project, even something as simple as a scrapbook or making a collage, is a great way to bring your family together and focus on making something creative and meaningful.
  • Spill the beans. Buy different types of dried beans (or break them out of the pantry) and place them in an extra-large bowl. Next, work with your child to separate the beans into different muffin tins. This simple activity engages fine motor skills, relieves stress, and will keep your child focused and quiet! This activity works best with kids 2.5 and older, but should still be fully supervised since beans could end up places that they shouldn’t be, like noses, and can be a choking hazard.
  • Any child old enough to count to four can learn to how to do deep breathing exercises to lower stress. Children, with the help of adults, slowly count to four as they inhale, and then count to four as they exhale. This exercise should be done for several minutes until the child is calm.
  • These can be any activity that the child enjoys doing. Encourage the child to participate on a regular basis. Engaging in a favorite hobby brings children enjoyment, gives them a break from the stressful situation, and may provide a fresh look at the situation. Offer children different activities to try if they don’t have a favorite hobby. Providers may plan experiences in art, music, board games, reading, puzzles, or science for the children to try.
  • Children should eat nutritious regular meals and snacks throughout the day to give them the energy they need to tackle the day. Foods filled with sugar and caffeine provide energy for a short time, but once it wears off children feel sluggish and tired. Getting the correct amount of sleep is important to help children think clearly and face the challenges of the day ahead.
